Sydney Festival Presents: Performance: Article 14.1

Sydney Festival Presents: Performance: Article 14.1

Artist Phuong Ngo weaves interviews, video and paper folding together into a moving durational performance and installation, reflecting on Vietnamese refugees’ stories of fear, loss, bravery, hope, family and community.

The son of Vietnamese refugees, Ngo revisits his family’s experience as boat people in his performance and installation, Article 14.1. Over ten days he will live in the MCA, surviving on the same provisions his parents had on their boat when they fled Vietnam after the fall of Saigon. During this time the artist will fold origami boats out of hell banknotes that will be burnt at sunset on the final day of the project in memory of those lost at sea.

You are invited to join Ngo in folding the paper boats and listen to interviews of Vietnamese refugees recounting their own journeys to starting a new life in Australia. The closing Boat Burning Ceremony will occur Wednesday 23 January, 6–9pm on our forecourt.
