The Changeover
A spooky tale of magic and the supernatural set in post-earthquake Christchurch, based on the Carnegie-winning YA novel by Margaret Mahy.
This event has now passed.
16 year-old Laura (Erana James) is looking after her little brother Jacko when they happen upon a sinister old man (a scary Timothy Spall) living in a shipping container full of creepy items. The old man, it turns out, is a demon, and he brands her brother with a supernatural stamp. Immediately, Jacko begins to sicken, and the only way Laura can save him is by discovering her own magic powers and battling the parasitic demon. To do that, she’ll need to overcome prejudice about magic – and enlist the help of a local coven of witches, her handsome school mate, and fellow demon fighter, Sorensen. This independent New Zealand film is spooky, original and compelling.
[Erana] James is a revelation as Laura, and Timothy Spall, one of the greatest character actors now working, gives her a perfect foil... an across-the-board excellent cast. – David Larsen, Noted.co.nz
Top-notch sound design, music well-chosen for a teen audience and, most importantly, really sharp acting from all involved. – Sarah Watt, stuff.co.nz
