PLAYWAVE CREATIVE REVIEW: IN REAL LIFE
Darlinghurst Theatre Company's In Real Life
reviewed by Zack Lewin
It’s pretty simple really, if you like Black Mirror, then you will love In Real Life. It’s just like Black Mirror, but on stage, and it’s amazing.
It’s pretty sad that Black Mirror gained enough recognition to appropriate every storyline that involves a near future reality because it means that artists like the ones behind In Real Life will have to be constantly barraged with “Oh this is just like Black Mirror”. The biggest point of separation is that In Real Life is clearly Australian. It is a unique take on the Australian pseudo-class system and how it will evolve as the world develops. A take on the humanity of the upper class, how it manifests entirely different to the humanity of those disadvantaged. It explores the effect of technology on society and individuals and does so in a captivating way. With striking visuals, confronting performances and themes sometimes too close to home In Real Life is well worth it
For some reason though it just didn’t quite get there for me. I loved it and thoroughly enjoyed myself, but something was missing and I’m still not sure what it was. But I'm glad that I did watch it, and I will see it again given the opportunity.
