Next up is Alexandro Gould-Arocha!
When did you become a Playwaver and what drew you to become a Playwave Creative?
I have been a Playwaver since 2022 and recently joined the Playwave Creative program in April this year. After attending the Beauty & The Beast Playwave Experience last year, I read a flyer promoting the Playwave Creative program. Previously, I had written a few reviews for shows, and was inspired to share my work on Playwave.
Your favourite memory as a Playwaver?
Definitely seeing Dumb Kids at KXT on Broadway last year. It was my first time within an indie theatre and since then I have actively sought out new independent works. I was in love with the theatre, a little cramped but it was cosy and has awesome vibes. The play was so hilarious and relevant, and relatable (for better or for worse). I have never felt so seen by a play. I still remember what it felt like to be in a room with everyone laughing and enjoying the play. It was quite a coincidence that the play was on Playwave because I was on a work placement week at Monkey Baa where I worked with one of the creatives involved mid-way through my placement. My supervisor was friends with the writer and was talking about how everyone needed to see it. So, I bought two tickets for the next day and was so glad that I saw it.
What is keeping your busy in 2024?
I am currently completing my HSC alongside three TAFE certificates in Musical Theatre, Film, and Theatre Production at Bradfield Senior College. I am so grateful to be at a school that supports my creative interests whilst also completing year 12.
Recently, I performed in SCAB by Danny Ball as part of ATYP’s Young Industry Studio. I am also part of the Griffin Ambassadors, Youth Advisory Council for Monkey Baa Theatre Company, and the Student Creative Voice Team for the 2024 Schools Spectacular.
I am also writing a play to submit to Queensland Theatre’s Young Playwrights Award. Later this year, I will be assistant directing Lifespan of a Fact with the Theatre on Chester, as well as directing a one-act play for their subscribers night.
Who or what inspires you creatively?
I am inspired by works that challenge our society, champion diverse viewpoints, and inspire audiences to reflect on their own self, situation, and/or society. Plays such as Prima Facie by Suzie Miller and City of Gold by Meyne Wyatt have heavily contributed to my belief that art is a driver of change, and I actively seek to create, support, and watch work that has something to say.
How has being a Playwaver impacted your experience of the arts in Sydney?
Playwave has been an extremely valuable resource for me to find affordable tickets to a variety of arts events within Sydney. The program has allowed me to see so many amazing shows ranging from lavish musicals at the Sydney Lyric Theatre to heartfelt independent shows at KXT. I have seen so much more theatre in the last two years than in my whole life thanks to Playwave. As a Playwave Creative, I feel so incredibly excited to have been given a voice and platform to share my experiences within the Sydney arts scene.
Your top 3 picks for the best places to experience the arts and live performance in Sydney.
-
Belvoir St Theatre
-
KXT on Broadway
-
Griffin Theatre Company
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I am obsessed with Alanis Morissette and listen to her on repeat (even the obscure songs).
What has been the best arts event you’ve been to this year?
Hard to pick just one but I’d say Summer of the Aliens from The Lewis Trilogy at Griffin Theatre Company. I particularly loved the set design where they stripped back the theatre to the original floorboards and brick walls. Afterwards, the other Griffin Ambassadors and I attended a Q&A by the the cast and director. I spoke to the actors at stage door, and met the two leads on the train home!
What arts events are you most looking forward to this year?
I’m really looking forward to seeing The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime at Belvoir and Dear Evan Hansen at STC.
