When Japan's SSSP kaiju defence taskforce finds itself in the midst of a particularly challenging kaiju encounter, a giant silver robot descends from the sky to rescue the country. Dubbed Ultraman, this robot’s identity and purpose are a mystery. As further alien forces arrive on earth, the taskforce, led by Kimio Tamura (Hidetoshi Nishijima, Drive My Car, SFF 2021), attempt to identify their true intentions. Mixing the optimistic retro-futurism of the ’60s television show with modernist pop-art aesthetics, Shin Ultraman is destined for future cult classic status, a delightful reimagining of one of Japan’s classic superheroes with a healthy dose of large-scale city-smashing combat to leave you cheering.
