Play Reading: The Falls

Play Reading: The Falls

A free reading of Hilary Bell's 'The Falls'

As part of celebrating 50 Years of the Stables, Griffin is presenting a series of rehearsed play readings of seminal works from the Stables’ canon across 2020. These readings are hosted by theatre aficionado John McCallum, former Griffin Script Club captain and theatre reviewer for the Australian.

Our third play reading for the year is The Falls by Hilary Bell and will be streamed live on Sunday 27 September 2020 at pm.

Revisit Sydney in 1901 and meet three of its Greatest Liars: polygamist Alberta; her husband, amateur archaeologist Jack; and Alberta’s long-lost sister and would-be memoirist Nellie. Then there’s the melancholic widower Pigeon; enamoured psychoanalyst Doctor Rachel Sylvester; and mute, bearded six-year-old called Praise-God.

We welcome back father daughter duo Hilary and John Bell, both staples of the Stables, to present this reading of The Falls—a Victorian melodrama, part-musical, part-ghost story, part-love story, and an exploration of deceit and self-delusion.

Run Time
Approximately 120 minutes plus a 20-minute post-reading Q&A with John McCallum and creatives involved in this reading.

The Falls play reading will be performed live at the SBW Stables. If there are any changes to this plan, you’ll be updated as soon as possible.

This event is free, but registration is essential.
